It's on sale right now on GOG (-75% | 6.79€). There are some enemy encounters, but it comes with an optional safe mode where enemies can do you no harm. The story one of the best I've ever experienced in a video game. SOMA is my absolute recommendation for both beginners and veterans in the genre.Some recommendations, should you decide to invest some money: Haven't played this one yet but looks interesting.

No More Room in Hell is a Source engine Left 4 Dead style game.I really enjoyed that game, but I'm a sucker for haunted houses. Kraven Manor is short Unreal Engine game in a haunted mansion.I've only ever played the first one but I will definitively give the sequel a go, too, some time. Estranged: Act 1 and Act 2 are very polished Source engine games.I won't say more about it to not spoil anything. Doki Doki Literature Club! is a visual novel style game and is very unusual for the horror genre.Might be a good start, although it could be a bit too intense for beginners.
